Running at Khao Cha-Ngor

One of the more established races in Thailand is the annual Khao sa-ngok Super-half Marathon at the Army base and cadet training school in Nakorn Nayok, about 100 km north of Bangkok. One of the best parts of this race is the distances, which are quite unique in Thailand. This is the only race I know of that offers a 32km distance. This is a great long run for people training for the Bangkok Marathon. The 16km distance run is great for people looking for a distance between the 10km and the half Marathon. A standard 10-km race is also offered. I ran the 32km race in 1997. This year, however I decided to do the 16km.
This year the race was held on November 12th. I arrived at the army base late in the afternoon. A free dinner was offered at the stadium in front of the sign up area. Rooms were available in the officers quarters on the base, right next to the start- finish line. These rooms were basic, but comfortable and only cost four hundred Baht a night.
The Loy Kratong festival was held on the 11th of November and a small lake had been set aside inside the army base for people to float their Kratongs. A band played near by. The lake looked beautiful with all the Kratongs floating on it.
The next morning the 32km race started at 5.30 and the 16km race at 5.45 and the 10 km at 6.00. We started by running around the back of the base and then up a steep hill past the officers club. Then it was back down and past the main gate where we turned left. Just after we turned the 10-km runners turned left. The 32 and 16-km runners continued on together until we reached the eastern gate to the base. At this point the 32-km runners turned right and went out of the army base. The 16-km runners went up a hilly road past a small lake. After three or four km we turned and headed back towards the base. After arriving back in the base we ran for about five more kilometres before crossing the finish line. My time was 1:31:52. I had been hoping to break one hour and thirty minutes, but as the course was quite hilly I was happy with my time.
